Magnetic Nanoparticles@Metal-Organic Framework Composites as Sustainable Environment Adsorbents

Abstract: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an intriguing class of porous inorganic-organic hybrid networks synthesized from metal ions with multidentate organic ligands. MOFs have uniform and tunable cavities and tailorable chemistry, making them promising materials for hazardous component removal from the environment. Controllable integration of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) and MOFs is leading to the creation of many novel multifunctional MOF-based composites, which exhibit advanced performance that is superior to b… Show more

“…The superparamagnetic core-shell MOF Fe 3 O 4 @Ni-MOF was prepared by Step-by-Step method. [43] At first, Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles were functionalized by mercaptoacetic acid (MAA). Next, functional MNPs were covered with MOF (Ni-MOF) after repeated cycles (Scheme 2).…”

“…The growth of Ni-MOF shell on the MAAfunctionalized Fe 3 O 4 core can be started by the metal ions binding to the MAA on the Fe 3 O 4 surface and then attaching the ligands from the solution. [43] The structural properties of synthesized Fe 3 O 4 @Ni-MOF were identified by FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction, TEM, and FESEM spectroscopy.…”

“…To date, most MOF/iNP composites have been developed for catalysis. 29 However, within the field of pollutant removal, iNPs have been combined with MOFs to yield MOF/iNP adsorbents with added functionalities such as magnetism 30,31 or photocatalytic degradation. 12,32,33 Herein we report new composite microbeads (hereafter, iNP@MOF-Beads) for simultaneous removal of various metals from water, which we obtained by incorporating inorganic nanoparticles (iNPs) into MOFs via a one-step spray-drying process (Fig.…”
