Magnetic methods and the timing of geological processes

Abstract: Magnetostratigraphy is best known as a technique that employs correlation among different stratigraphic sections using the magnetic directions that define geomagnetic polarity reversals as marker-horizons. The ages of the polarity reversals provide common tie points among the sections, allowing accurate time correlation. Recently, magnetostratigraphy has acquired a broader meaning, now referring to many types of magnetic measurements within a stratigraphic sequence. Many of these measurements provide correlati… Show more

“…U‐channel ARM and IRM data were processed and deconvolved with the software of Xuan and Channell (). Parameters were calculated as follows: (i) S ratio (as IRM@‐0.3/IRM@1) and (ii) Hard IRM (HIRM) (as [IRM@‐0.3+IRM@1]/2) (Jovane et al, ; Liu et at., ; Verosub & Roberts, ).…”

“…χ includes contributions from all minerals (diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic) present in the sediment in proportion to their abundance. Usually in the Tethyan Realm, it is a direct function of the terrigenous input into the basin (Jovane et al, 2004(Jovane et al, , 2013Roberts et al, 2013).…”

“…Artificial magnetic fields of known characteristics were used in order to study the response of the samples in different conditions and the following parameters were determined: (a) anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), which was measured first by imposing a 0.1 mT DC bias field while applying a 0.1 T demagnetizing alternating field, and then by progressively demagnetizing via AF with fields of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1,000 mT; (b) backfield isothermal remanent magnetization (BIRM), was imparted by applying first a 1.0T direct field (IRM@1.0) and subsequently by applying a 0.1 (IRM@-0.1) and 0.3 mT (IRM@-0.3) direct field in the opposite direction (e.g., King and Channell, 1991;Verosub and Roberts, 1995;Liu et al, 2012;Jovane et al, 2013).…”
