Magnetic memory and spontaneous vortices in a van der Waals superconductor

Abstract: Doped Mott insulators exhibit some of the most intriguing quantum phases of matter, including quantum spin-liquids, unconventional superconductors, and non-Fermi liquid metals [1][2][3] . Such phases often arise when itinerant electrons are close to a Mott insulating state, and thus experience strong spatial correlations 4,5 . Proximity between different layers of van der Waals heterostructures naturally realizes a platform for experimentally studying the relationship between localized, correlated electrons a… Show more

“…Although this vortex-memory effect was found to be absent in cuprates [15], this idea remains to be an ingenious attempt to detect the topological order beyond fractional quantum Hall liquids. In this Letter, we propose the superconducting van der Waals material 4Hb-TaS 2 [16,17] to be a physical platform for the Z 2 topological order, and interpret the recentlydiscovered magnetic memory effect and the spontaneous vortex generation [16] as the vison-vortex nucleation due to the Z 2 topological order. Our proposal for 4Hb-TaS 2 is a vortex lattice version of the Senthil-Fisher single-vortex proposal for cuprates, and bridges the puzzling experiments in 4Hb-TaS 2 with the forefront of topological orders and their detection.…”

“…This effect disappears when the thermal cycle reaches 3.6K that is 0.9K above T c . The magnetic signal was found to be absent both below T c (without the vortices) and above T c [16], which may be a bit incompatible with the chiral spin liquid (CSL) scenario as the scalar spin chirality would induce a weak magnetization.…”

“…Although specifically motivated by PdCrO 2 , our theory has relevance beyond this single material. There are a number of exciting new material platforms that have come to the forefront in recent years that consist of stacks of metallic and Mott insulating layers [49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57]. In what follows, we develop a general framework to address electrical transport in such layered material platforms, and our conclusions can be used to disentangle the various sources of interaction between electrons, local-moments and phonon degrees of freedom.…”
