Magnetic Measurements and Commissioning of the Fast Ramped 90$^{\circ}$ Bending Magnet in the PROSCAN Gantry 2 Project at PSI

Abstract: The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI/Switzerland) is developing, within the PROSCAN project, a new method of proton radiotherapy for treating cancers using a gantry based spot scanning technique for irradiating deep-seated tumors. Among the innovative elements are the laminated magnets in the beam lines, including the newly conceived Gantry 2, that will enable rapid energy changes ( 150 ms) to modulate the range of the scanning pencil beam in three dimensions over the tumor volume. The last and multifunctional 90 … Show more

“…Indeed, other third-generation synchrotron light sources in the world are running with Superbend-type dipoles but these are of the electromagnetic type, not the PM type, e.g. the ALS (Robin et al, 2002) (5 T superconducting magnets) and SLS (2.9 T normal conducting magnets) (Gabard et al, 2011) storage rings. The specificity of this project is that only one Superbend is installed in the ring whereas for the other machines the number of Superbends respects the symmetry of the magnetic structure.…”

“…For these AC large aperture magnets, it is supposed that eddy current will be induced not only in the magnet components, such as iron cores, coils and end plates, but also in the metal apparatuses near the magnets [2], [3]. So eddy current field and heat in those metal components should be dealt with properly during the magnet design and production.…”
