Magnetic Hot Spots in Closely Spaced Thick Gold Nanorings

Abstract: Light-interaction at optical frequencies is mostly mediated by the electric component of the electromagnetic field, being the response to the magnetic component usually negligible.Recently, it has be shown that properly engineered metallic nanoparticles can provide a magnetic response at optical frequencies originated from real or virtual flows of electric current in the structure. In this work, we demonstrate a new plasmonic mode which emerges from the strong coupling of high-aspect ratio gold nanorings. The … Show more

“…1 Among the wide variety of NPs with diverse shapes, 'toroidal/ring' NPs, as artificial complex nanostructures with ring cavities, are of particular interest because they exhibit novel and unique properties in sensing, 2 magnetic configuration, 3 optical response 4 and plasmonic behavior. 5 In particular, Au or Ag nanostructures with toroidal shapes (nanorings) exhibit near infrared resonances that are not observed in similar disk-like particles without holes.…”

“…nanostructures provide strong confinement of the electric [101] and even magnetic field [102] in deep subwavelength regions via excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances. Interestingly, they also exhibit vibrational resonances in the GHz regime [103].…”

“…In addition, the electric field enhancement at the gaps is reduced from E E i 2 = 2065. 4 to E E i 2 = 1701.6 when the HRI is introduced and the frequency is redshifted. Since the MIM structures in general can be considered as a resonant LC circuit with the metal strips and the gaps at the ends as inductors and capacitors respectively [2,11], it appears that inserting the HRI material at the center reduces the potential drop between the strips pairs which in turn increases the capacitance resulting in an increased current and a higher magnetic moment.…”

“…As a result, the magnetic plasmon resonance appears in the optical-NIR range of the spectrum [2,3]. Several structures have been proposed in the literature to demonstrate magnetic hot spots including nanorings [4], MIM nanosandwiches [5][6][7] and nanoparticle clusters [8,9]. The MIM structure (nanosandwich) consists of two metallic strips separated by a dielectric layer.…”
