Magnetic heterogeneous catalytic ozonation: a new removal method for phenol in industrial wastewater

Abstract: In this study, a new strategy in catalytic ozonation removal method for degradation of phenol from industrial wastewater was investigated. Magnetic carbon nano composite as a novel catalyst was synthesized, characterized and then used in the catalytic ozonation process (COP) and compared with the single ozonation process (SOP). The influential parameters were all investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of phenol and COD (chemical oxygen demand) in COP (98.5%, 69.8%) was higher than those o… Show more

“…The increase of toluene degradation rate with an increase in catalyst dose can be attributed to the expansion of surface area of the catalyst and also the availability of more active sites for ozone molecules decomposition and subsequent reactions (18). In one previous study (21) on the catalytic ozonation of amoxicillin (with NH 4 Cl) and also phenol removal using magnetic heterogeneous catalytic ozonation by Dadban Shahamat et al (51), similar results were reported. In addition, as presented by Rosal et al (55), at fixed flow rate of ozone, greater increase of catalyst concentration can accelerate the ozone transfer from the gas media to the aqueous phase and also increase the decomposition rate of ozone molecules.…”

“…Iron oxide catalysts have been widely used in wastewater treatment (Table 5), like dyes [68], phenol [69], p-chlorobenzoic acid [70], nitrobenzene [71], and the tertiary treatment of industrial wastewater [72]. They have received increasing attention due to their advantages, such as (1) abundance;…”

“…21,22 Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation shows better performance, presenting high oxidation efficiency, low O 3 consumption, and a high reaction rate compared with single ozonation. 19,23 Thus, herein, a new hybrid catalyst was synthesized via the combination of three materials in three steps: mixing, sintering, and granulation. In this work, nano-MgO, which was previously found to be effective in the degradation of refractory organic pollutants 19,20,24,25 due to its high activity, 26,27 chemical stability, 25,26 and environmental friendliness, 19,28,29 was selected as the main part of the new catalyst.…”
