Magnetic fields of AGNs and standard accretion disk model: testing by optical polarimetry

Abstract: We have developed the method that allows us to estimate the magnetic field strength at the horizon of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) through the observed polarization of optical emission of the accreting disk surrounding SMBH. The known asymptotic formulae for the Stokes parameters of outgoing radiation are azimuthal averaged, which corresponds to an observation of the disk as a whole. We consider two models of the embedding 3D-magnetic field, the regular field, and the regular field with an additional chaot… Show more

“…The dependence of the degree of polarization on the spin of the central black hole is studied in Silant'ev et al (2013b). The approximate analytical expressions for the polarization of the radiation from a magnetized disk around black hole can be found in Silant'ev (2002Silant'ev ( , 2005, Silant'ev et al (2009).…”

“…To confirm this, we derive equations for the degree p of polarization and position angle χ of optical radiation emerging from the surface of a magnetized accretion disk [34]. Since accretion disks are observed as a whole, we have to use expressions that are averaged over the local azimuthal angle:…”

“…The magnetic coupling process is an effective mechanism for transferring energy and angular momentum from a rotating black hole to its surrounding accretion disk (Zhang, Lu & Zhang 2005). Since the magnetic field on the horizon is brought and held by accretion disk matter, some relation must exist between the magnetic field strength and the BH mass and the bolometric luminosity (Silant'ev et al 2009):…”

“…The magnetic field strengths and their topology in an accretion disk around the supermassive black hole can be determined by the UV polarimetric observations with use of Silant'ev and Gnedin method based onto the account of the Faraday rotation effect on the photon mean free path in the electron scattering process (Gnedin & Silant'ev 1997;Silant'ev et al 2009). …”
