Magnetic Fields in the Infrared Dark Cloud G34.43+0.24

Abstract: We present the B-fields mapped in IRDC G34.43+0.24 using 850 µm polarized dust emission observed with the POL-2 instrument at JCMT. We examine the magnetic field geometries and strengths in the northern, central, and southern regions of the filament. The overall field geometry is ordered and aligned closely perpendicular to the filament's main axis, particularly in regions containing the central clumps MM1 and MM2, whereas MM3 in the north has field orientations aligned with its major axis. The overall field o… Show more

“…Previous studies concluded that the B-fields are observed to be mostly perpendicular to the main axis of dense filaments (e.g., Planck Collaboration et al 2016a, 2016b, 2016cPattle et al 2017;Soler et al 2017;Ward-Thompson et al 2017;Liu et al 2018;Fissel et al 2019;Soam et al 2019). Three filaments in NGC 1333 (#7, #13, and #18b) show perpendicular B-field orientations, which is consistent with those studies.…”

“…The angle γ is an inclination angle of the B-field with respect to the POS. Ward-Thompson et al 2017;Liu et al 2018;Fissel et al 2019;Soam et al 2019). Thus, our model, where we assume that a filament and the B-field are orthogonal in a 3D space, can successfully reproduce these observational results.…”

“…. This shows that the magnetic field required for the additional support against gravitational collapse could then be more than achieved if these cores follow the Crutcher et al (2010) relation, which is broadly consistent with the typical magnetic field strengths observed within molecular clouds (Pillai et al 2015(Pillai et al , 2016Soam et al 2019;Tang et al 2019).…”

“…We use the mean line-of-sight results from the PPMAP project shown in Figure 2 (Marsh et al 2016(Marsh et al , 2017. To check the fidelity of the PPMAP column density and temperature maps, where possible, we compare to the corresponding maps from Nguyen Luong et al (2011), Lim et al (2016, Zhang et al (2017), and Soam et al (2019). These authors independently produced column density and temperature maps following a more conventional far-infrared SED fitting routine, whilst accounting for the background in Herschel observations.…”
