Magnetic Fe3O4-encapsulated VAN@MIL-101(Fe) with mixed-valence sites and mesoporous structures as efficient bifunctional water splitting photocatalysts

Abstract: Fe3O4/VAN@MIL-101(Fe) with both mesoporous and mixed-valence Fe3+/Fe2+ structures was controllably synthesized in the synthesis of MIL-101(Fe), and it was used as a bifunctional photocatalyst in photocatalytic water splitting.

“…S2 †) patterns of the materials MIL-101(Fe) and MIL-101(Fe II /Fe III ) showed welldefined diffraction peaks at 2θ = 9.4°, 12.6°, 16.6°, 18.8°, and 22.0°, consistent with the results of the previous study. [35][36][37][38][39] FTIR spectra (Fig. 2a) of the MIL-101(Fe II /Fe III ) and MIL-101 (Fe) materials showed small but unequivocal differences.…”

“…The absorption peaks observed at 1600 cm −1 and 1396 cm −1 were attributed to the stretching vibration of CvC in the benzene ring and the symmetric [ν s (C-O)] vibrations of the carboxyl groups, respectively. 36 The peak at 750 cm −1 was assigned to the bending vibration of the C-H in the benzene ring of H 2 BDC. The peak at 1680 cm −1 in the MIL-101(Fe) spectrum was the stretching vibration of CvO, which moved towards a lower wave number of 1662 cm −1 in the MIL-101(Fe II /Fe III ) spectrum due to the forming of hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl group.…”

“…Fe containing MOFs display dual functions, in which the Fe sites act as photocatalytic sites, whereas the organic linkers are responsible for charge separation and prevention of charge recombination . MIL-101 containing transition metal Fe displayed excellent ability for the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation and water splitting reactions. , PCN-250 is another Fe-based MOF which can be further enhanced by adding a second metal ion such as Mn, Zn, Ni, and Co into the framework . The classification and characteristics of metal–organic frameworks discussed above are summarized and illustrated as shown in Table and Figure .…”

“…the spectrum of MF-50 is very similar to that of MIL-101, but its satellite peaks are shifted, demonstrating an interaction between Fe 3 O 4 and MIL-101. As shown in the Fig.2d, the O 1s spectra of both MIL-101 and MF-50 can be divided into three peaks corresponding to C-O, C = O, and Fe-O bonds(Guo et. al, 2020).The Fe-O peak of MIL-101 is lower than that of the C = O bond, while the contrary is observed for MF, indicating that Fe 3 O 4 is successfully compounded with MIL-101.3.2.…”
