Magnetic coupling effect of a PM synchronous machine having concentrated windings

Abstract: Concentrated windings, in other words fractional slot windings are getting popular because of many proven advantages. In this study, a concentrated winding electric machine is designed for industrial applications. Although, in concentrated winding, mutual coupling between two adjacent coils is assumed to be zero, finite element analysis indicates that significant coupling may exist. Studies indicate that the coupling phenomena degrades fault tolerant capabilities of the concentrated winding structure. This pap… Show more

“…This voltage waveform is shown in Figure 8. Figure 9 shows the induced torque due only to coupling between the winding sets (Ayaz et al, 2012). The peak-induced voltage of phase B2 for Type-2 owing to mutual coupling is around 4.4 V. The peak-induced voltage value of phase B2 for Type-3 is around 85 mV.…”

“…The overlapping nature of winding exhibits a higher mutual coupling effect making it a poor choice for the independent operation of motor and generator. For such operations, the dual winding PM machines using a specific arrangement of nonoverlapped nature have been studied in [9,10,11,12]. This type of winding benefits the shorter end windings, high slot fill factor, and flexible control to improve the performance [13].…”
