Magnetic Circular Dichroism of the α Bands of Some Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Abstract: The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, 1,2-benzanthracene, picene, and 1,2–3, 4-dibenzanthracene) has been measured in the α (1Lb) absorption region. A band in the MCD spectrum of anthracene which does not correspond to any reported absorption band has been assigned to the hitherto unobserved α band. The sign and magnitude of the MCD's observed are in good agreement with those calculated using CNDO wave-functions.

“…As shown by Larkindale and Simkin [15], two adjacent mutually perpendicular transitions have Faraday B values (the sign of the Faraday B term is opposite to that in the MCD spectrum) that are nearly equal in magnitude but opposite in sign. The Faraday B values extracted from the MCD spectra are À 2.81 Â 10 À3 and 1.47 Â 10 À3 Bohr magneton (Debye) 2 cm À1 .…”
