Abstract:We address the detection of a ferromagnetic target that generates an anomaly in the ambient Earth magnetic field. Detection of an anomaly buried in magnetic noise requires the use of a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD), such as the orthonormal basis functions (OBFs) detector. In contrast to the OBFs detector that relies on target signal waveform ensemble, we propose the adaptive minimum entropy detector (MED) to detect any changes in the magnetic noise pattern. Hence, we have constructed the MED based on the mag… Show more
“…As a part of this effort, an Applied Physics System fluxgate sensor (Model 1540) [5], and a Geometrics optically pumped Cesium sensor (Model 824-A) [6] were selected to conduct a limited number of field trials during normal operations at Manassas Regional Airport (KHEF) and Washington Dulles International Airport (KIAD). MITRE also examined the use of advanced signal processing techniques [7,8] to improve target detection.…”

Abstract-The proposed surface surveillance concept divides airport runways and taxiways into a number of operationally suitable, discrete, and contiguous sections called blocks. The system uses magnetometers or other suitable sensors positioned at each of the block boundaries to monitor aircraft and vehicle movements into and out of these blocks. The system then indicates the block occupancy information for tower controllers on a two-dimensional (2-D) display of an airport map. This surveillance information is envisioned to improve controller situational awareness of surface operations, particularly in reduced visibility.

“…Arie Sheinker etc. have successfully utilized minimum entropy filter in magnetic anomaly detection [4]. The signal they acquired is similar to that of Fig.2.…”
An optical yarn quality measurement system is constructed. To extract yarn defects of neps and foreign fibers with different colors, a novel structure of optoelectronic sensor is proposed. The experimental signals acquired by the system perform low signal to noise ratio therefore makes it difficult to defect discrimination. Concerning these problems, two methods, K-th moment filter and minimum entropy filter, are utilized for signal processing. The results indicate that both methods are effective for the extracting of abnormal signals corresponding to yarn defects. The K-th moment filter has the advantage of lower computational complexity and is more effective in on-line measurement system. On the other hand, the minimum entropy filter can remain more local tiny features in the processed signals by adjusting the parameters properly so that is better in anomaly detecting of the defects in different levels.
“…Though before the technology is widely used in many cases, the range of detection is limited because of magnetic noise. In the past few years, there have been some noise reduction methods such as entropy filter [1], referenced magnetometer [2], high-order crossing method [3], orthonormal basis functions (OBF) matched filtering method [4,5], and wavelet transform method [6][7][8]. In most research environments, it is assumed that the target moves along a straight line relatively to the magnetometer.…”
Abstract-Magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) is to find hidden ferromagnetic objects, and a hidden object is often described as a magnetostatic dipole. Many detection methods are based on the orthonormal basis functions when the target moves along a straight line relatively to the magnetometer. A new kind of parabolic trail orthonormal basis functions (PTOBF) method is proposed to detect the magnetic target when the trajectory of the target is parabola. The simulation experiment confirms that the proposed method can detect the magnetic anomaly signals in white Gaussian noise when SNR is −15.56 dB. The proposed method is sensitive to the characteristic time and curvature. High detection probability and simple implementation of proposed method make it attractive for the real-time applications.
