Abstract:We report the synthesis of dextran-coated iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (DIO-NPs) with spherical shape and uniform size distribution as well as their accumulation and toxic effects on Jurkat cells up to 72 h. The characterization of dextran-coated maghemite nanoparticles was done by X-ray diffraction and dynamic light scattering analyses, transmission electron microscopy imaging, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, magnetic hysteresis, and relaxometry measurements. The quantification of DIO-NPs intracellular uptake showed a progressive accumulation of iron as a function of time and dose accompanied by additional lysosome formation and an increasing darkening exhibited by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. The cytotoxicity assays revealed a decrease of cell viability and a loss of membrane integrity in a time-and dose-dependent manner. Exposure to DIO-NPs determined an increase in reactive oxygen species level up to 72 h. In the first two days of exposure, the level of reduced glutathione decreased and the amount of malondyaldehyde increased, but at the end of the experiment, their concentrations returned to control values. These nanoparticles could be used as contrast agents for MRI but several parameters concerning their interaction with the cells should be taken into consideration for a safe utilization.

BiFeO3–CoFe2O4–PbTiO3 composites: structural, multiferroic, and optical characteristics

Three-phase magnetoelectric composites (1 -x) (0.7BiFeO 3 -0.3CoFe 2 O 4 )-xPbTiO 3 (or equivalently written as (1 -x)(0.7BFO-0.3CFO)-xPT) with x variations 0, 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, and 1.0 were synthesized using hybrid processing route. The effects of PT addition on structural, multiferroic, and optical properties have been subsequently investigated. A detailed Rietveld refinement analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns has been performed, which confirms the presence of structural phases of individual constituents in the composites. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images are taken for microstructural analysis and grain size determination. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of 0.3CFO-0.7BFO reveals the average particle size to be lying in the window of 10-15 nm. The temperature-dependent dielectric constant at various frequencies (1, 10, 50, 100, and 500 kHz) has been studied, and the dielectric study reveals the increase of dielectric constant and decrease of average dielectric loss of composites with incorporation of PT content. Room temperature ferromagnetic behavior of composites is confirmed through the observation of magnetization versus magnetic field (M-H) hysteresis loops. The variation of magnetization with temperature indicates the presence of spin glass behavior in composites. Magnetoelectric coupling is evidenced in the composites through the observation of dependence of the dielectric constant on magnetic field, and magnetodielectric response of 2.05 % is observed for 45 mol% addition of PT content. The fractional change of magnetic field-induced dielectric constant can also be expressed as De r * cM 2 , and the value of c is found to be *1.08 9 10 -2 (emu/g) -2 for composite with x = 0.40. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy of samples is carried out to analyze various bonds formation in the composites.

Magnetic nanoparticles (NP), such as magnetite, have been the subject of research for application in the biomedical field, especially in Magnetic Hyperthermia Therapy (MHT), a promising technique for cancer therapy. NP are often coated with different compounds such as natural or synthetic polymers to protect them from oxidation and enhance their colloidal electrostatic stability while maintaining their thermal efficiency. In this work, the synthesis and characterization of magnetite nanoparticles coated with fucoidan, a biopolymer with recognized biocompatibility and antitumoral activity, is reported. The potential application of NP in MHT was evaluated through the assessment of Specific Loss Power (SLP) under an electromagnetic field amplitude of 14.7 kA m−1 and at 276 kHz. For fucoidan-coated NP, it was obtained SLP values of 100 and 156 W/g, corresponding to an Intrinsic Loss Power (ILP) of 1.7 and 2.6 nHm2kg−1, respectively. These values are, in general, higher than the ones reported in the literature for non-coated magnetite NP or coated with other polymers. Furthermore, in vitro assays showed that fucoidan and fucoidan-coated NP are biocompatible. The particle size (between ca. 6 to 12 nm), heating efficiency, and biocompatibility of fucoidan-coated magnetite NP meet the required criteria for MHT application.
