Magnetic and crystal structures of the one-dimensional ferromagnetic chain pyroxeneNaCrGe2O6

Abstract: We investigated the magnetic and structural properties of the ferromagnetic pyroxene NaCrGe 2 O 6 by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry and powder neutron diffraction. This material is the only ferromagnetic member of the recently reported multiferroic pyroxene family AMX 2 O 6 ͑A =Li,Na; M = Fe, Cr; X =Si,Ge͒. Below T C = 6 K, the magnetic structure is characterized by one-dimensional magnetic chains with spins aligned along the c axis of the monoclinic cell. The magnetic moment of Cr 3+… Show more

“…15 One characteristic of these pyroxene materials is that they are good representative of low dimensional magnetism with linear chains running along the c axis. [10][11][12][13][14][15] Magnetic response shows for both compounds a broad maximum characteristic of low dimensional magnetism ͑see Figs. 1 and 3͒.…”

“…These materials have been extensively investigated due to their importance in mineralogy [5][6][7][8][9] and their low dimensional magnetic properties. [10][11][12][13][14][15] The recent work by Jodlauk et al shed some different light on these materials motivated by the idea that this family could be a good representative of a magnetically frustrated lattice. 16,17 The existence and possible interplay of low dimensionality and magnetic frustration resulting in multiferroic and/or magnetoelectric properties in the pyroxenes will probably open new avenues to tune and investigate the richness of the physic in this family.…”

“…This allows additional different magnetic interaction pathways in P2 1 /c. Most of the "magnetic pyroxenes" order in a rather simple way below T ~40 K, from fully ferromagnetic to fully antiferromagnetic within and between the M1 chains (Cheng et al 2013;Janson et al 2014;Nenert et al 2009bNenert et al , 2010bRedhammer et al 2008Redhammer et al , 2009Redhammer et al , 2010bRedhammer et al , 2011bRedhammer et al , 2012Redhammer et al , 2013Redhammer et al , 2015. Only a few compounds are reported exhibiting a complex cycloidal magnetic ordering, among them NaFeGe 2 O 6 and NaFeSi 2 O 6 (Drokina et al 2011;Redhammer et al 2011a).…”

“…; X = Ge, Si) have significant interest in solid state physics due to their physical properties. Magnetic studies have been carried out for the family pyroxenes compound: there are various types of magnetic state (antiferromagnetic [1][2][3][4], ferromagnetic [3][4][5], modulated magnetic structure [6,7], spin gap state [8]) connected to the features of the pyroxene crystal structure which allows the existence of competing magnetic exchange interactions.…”
