Magnetic Alignment of the Chiral Nematic Phase of a Cellulose Microfibril Suspension

Abstract: Stable suspensions of tunicate cellulose microfibrils were prepared by acid hydrolysis of the cellulosic mantles of tunicin. They formed a chiral nematic phase above a critical concentration. External magnetic fields were applied to the chiral nematic phase in two different manners to control its phase structure. (i) Static magnetic fields ranging 1-28 T were used to align the chiral nematic axis (helical axis) in the field direction. (ii) A rotating magnetic field (5 T, 10 rpm) was applied to unwind the helic… Show more

“…20 Because the rods of a cholesteric CNC suspension are all perpendicular to the helix axis, a cholesteric CNC suspension placed in a sufficiently strong magnetic field will have its helix uniformly aligned along the field direction. This has been experimentally confirmed by Revol et al 37 and Kimura et al 80 The latter team found that the application of a moderate field of 1 T over a few hours can give good results. The procedure should work best for suspensions toward the low-concentration side of the cholesteric regime, which minimizes the viscosity.…”

“…In 50 years apart into 21 st century, Rånby's work in acid hydrolysis on native cellulose had been a solid guidance on blossoming numerous cellulose particle extraction from biomass sources, to name a few, tunicate [2], ramie [3], and wood [4].…”

“…LIMITATION OF ABSTRACT has been aligned (Kondo et al 2001;Kondo et al 2004;Gindl et al 2006). Moreover, many researchers have given their efforts to align cellulose with electric field or magnetic field (Kondo et al 2001;Sugiyama et al 1992;Kimura et al 2005;Bordel et al 2006). However, people have not paid their attention on improving piezoelectric effect in aligned cellulose film, although small piezoelectric effect in cellulose has been reported long time ago (Fukada 1968 ).…”
