Magnet Retained Cheek Plumper to Enhance Denture Esthetics: Case Reports

Abstract: Handicap due to the loss of teeth in patients can be severe due to the impairment of masticatory function and facial disfigurement leading to negative psychological impact on the individual. To combat this, apart from the regular measures of positioning the teeth to obtain lip support, excellent denture esthetics can be achieved by providing additional support to the slumped tissues. This clinical report highlights a technique to provide support for sunken cheeks using detachable acrylic cheek plumpers, retain… Show more

“…Kamakshi et al 6 and Deogade et al 7 used magnets as attachments, but it is seen that magnets lose their magnetism over a period and thus push buttons were used in the cheek plumpers to increase the longevity of the check plumpers.…”

“…It can also not be used in patients with limited mouth opening. Some authors have used magnets [1, 4-5] and push button detachable cheek plumper [3, 6-7] as attachments to overcome the demerits of undetectable cheek plumper. But these magnets and push buttons as attachments also have some disadvantages.…”

“…8 If NdFeB magnets are used, these magnets have a close fitting magnetic field, but their effects on pacemaker and intraoral tissue are still to be documented. 6 Customized Co-Cr frameworks with attachments 5 have been used. Co-Cr is biocompatible, rarely produces any allergic reaction, and is resistant to corrosion, but increases the cost, labor, and weight of the prosthesis.…”

“…A conventional cheek plumper is a single‐unit prosthesis with extension near the premolar‐molar region that supports the cheek . The designs previously reported have the following disadvantages: (1) the external contour of the cheek plumper is not contoured to function in harmony with muscular activity in the region of its incorporation, leading to frequent dislodgement of the denture during speech, (2) the extra bulk of acrylic and attachments like magnets or customized Co‐Cr attachments may increase the weight of the prosthesis. In the past, many other attachments have been used for the purpose of connecting the plumper to the denture (e.g., magnets, customized Co‐Cr attachments, etc.)…”
