“…During the hyperparathyroid state, a negative magnesium balance occurs as a result of the mobilisation of magnesium along with calcium from the bones, with a concomitant increase in the urinary excretion of this ion. Other reports on hypomagnesaemia (Hall & Joffe, 1973;Geiderman et a!, 1979) emphasise organic mental symptoms, particularly deficits in spatial conceptuali sation, and the well-known manifestations of neuro muscular irritability. Hallucinations are predominant ly visual, but a systematised paranoid psychosis is rare.…”

“…Hallucinations are predominant ly visual, but a systematised paranoid psychosis is rare. Nevertheless, the notion of magnesium playing a,role in the development of psychotic symptoms is appealing because of its close interactions with acetylcholine and calcium (Hall & Joffe, 1973;Geiderman et a!, 1979;Massey, 1978). Another interesting problem is the possibility of co-existing abnormalities in the function ing of more than one gland, as documented by Feldman et al's case (1968), which distorts the symptoms of the co-existing disorders and may confuse the approach to diagnosis.…”

“…Unfortunately, this is not easy to measure. This dilemma has led to magnesium being described variously as a "Cinderella element", the "forgotten electrolyte", or the "neglected cation" in biological systems (Frausto da Silva and Williams, 1991;Geiderman et al, 1979;Foy, 1980, respectively).…”

“…3 and "The forgotten electrolyte." 4 Hypomagnesaemia is common in critically ill patients, and there is strong, consistent clinical evidence, largely from observational studies showing that hypomagnesaemia is significantly associated with increased need for prolonged ICU stay and increased mortality.…”
