Magnesium oxide microspheres as a novel solid‐phase extraction sorbent for the determination of benzo[a]pyrene in environmental water samples

Abstract: Magnesium oxide microspheres were developed as a novel SPE sorbent for the determination of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), one of the most potent carcinogenic agents, in environmental water samples. The parameters controlling the extraction efficiency, such as elution volume, flow rate, pH values, and breakthrough volume, were investigated in detail. Considering the facile preparation and satisfying recovery, a corresponding analytical method has been developed to determine the concentration of BaP in real tap water, r… Show more

“…Magnesium oxide (MgO) is a versatile material with a wide range of applications across industries in technologies, environmental protection, construction, electrochemistry, pharmaceuticals, and chemistry, owing to its heat-resistant, binding, and alkaline properties. MgO nanoparticles are used to enhance the reactivity and performance of devices and systems in various applications MgO is present in minerals such as periclase, which is the main component of rocks known as magnesite. It can also be synthesized through various processes, including the calcination of magnesium carbonate minerals, hydroxide precipitation, and thermal decomposition of magnesium salts.…”

“…Some reviews reported that the total PAH contents were 23.4–234.3 μg kg −1 ( n = 117) for oil samples collected from Poland , 10.4–112.0 μg kg −1 ( n = 42) from Brazil, and 40.2–624.0 μg kg −1 ( n = 296) from India . Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is considered a marker of occurrence and effect of the carcinogenic PAHs in food, since it has a very similar distribution profile with other measured PAHs in various foodstuffs . The European Commission set the maximum level of 2.0 μg kg −1 of BaP in foodstuffs containing fats and oils .…”

“…Alternatively, alumina is often used for sample purification and for thin layer chromatography. Until recently, it has been found that magnesium oxide (MgO) microspheres exhibit excellent performance in chromatographic separation [4] as well as in sample pretreatment [5,6]. For instance, as a packing material, MgO microspheres exhibit unique selectivity and excellent retention property for the separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in normal-phase liquid chromatography; as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, it can achieve effective preconcentration of PAHs from environmental water samples.…”

“…However, there is an urgent problem to be solved to achieve a fast and effective enrichment. That is, when the aqueous solutions with low concentration of PAHs are loaded through MgO cartridges at a fast flow rate, the extraction efficiencies of PAHs will decrease [5,6], limiting its applications in environmental analysis. Therefore, to overcome this drawback, it is necessary to modify the surface of MgO for strengthening the retention interactions between MgO and target compounds.…”
