Magic wand and the Enigma of the Sphinx

Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation of the benefits and user acceptance of a multimodal interface in which the user interacts with a game-like interactive virtual reality application ''The Enigma of the Sphinx''. The interface consists of a large projection screen as the main display, a ''magic wand'', a stereo sound system and the user's voice for ''casting spells''. We present our conclusions concerning ''friendliness'' and sense of presence, based on observations of more than 150 users in a public event. r

“…In [20], for example, the magic metaphor of a flying carpet is mentioned, but in [21] the metaphor of a magic carpet is realized, for instance, moving in the virtual reality environment. In [22][23][24][25][26], the ways of using a "magic wand" are described. A magic wand is considered a manipulation metaphor to form an interface in systems with elements of virtual reality.…”

“…Examples of systems implementing the semi-immersive approach are: "The Enigma of the sphinx" [1] and the "Magic Wand" [7]. In the same line of research, "Conducting a virtual orchestra" [25] proposes a semi-immersive VE based on a large projection screen, a handheld device and 3D sound rendering.…”
