“…First employed to study halo systems [8][9][10], subsequent analyses have used this experimental approach to deduce spectroscopic factors of individual single-particle states in many cases [5,[11][12][13][14][15][16]. In so doing, nucleon knockout reactions have contributed to the clarification of the evolution of shell structure toward the nucleon drip lines, helping to unravel the disappearance of familiar magic numbers and the formation of new shell gaps in nuclei with extreme N : Z ratios [17][18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…Bazin et al [6] have shown that two-proton removal reactions from beams of neutron-rich species at intermediate energies proceed as direct reactions and that partial cross sections to different final states of the residue provide structure information. More recently, such a reaction was used to infer the magicity of the very neutron-rich 42 Si nucleus [7].…”

“…Bazin et al [6] have shown that two-proton removal reactions from beams of neutron-rich species at intermediate energies proceed as direct reactions and that partial cross sections to different final states of the residue provide structure information. More recently, such a reaction was used to infer the magicity of the very neutron-rich 42 Si nucleus [7].In the current experiment, sizable cross sections for the 9 Be( 54 Ti, 52 Ca+γ)X reaction were found to feed only the 52 Ca ground state and a 3 − level with an excitation energy near 4 MeV, bypassing completely the first 2 + level at 2.6 MeV. These observations can be reproduced qualitatively by calculations which assign the 3 − level to the promotion of protons across the Z = 20 shell gap.…”

“…However, proton shell structure must also be involved [18][19][20]. Interest in the evolution of single-proton energies in the N = 20−28 Ca isotopes dates back to at least 1964, when Bansal and French [21] argued that the large gap that exists between the d 3/2 and s 1/2 proton orbits at N = 20 narrows with the addition of neutrons and finally disappears at N = 28 because of the interaction of protons in these orbits with the neutrons in the f 7/2 orbit.…”
