Maggot Extracts Alleviate Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in Acute Experimental Colitis via the Activation of Nrf2

Abstract: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a common chronic remitting disease driven through altered immune responses with production of inflammatory cytokines. Oxidant/antioxidant balance is also suggested to be an important factor for the recurrence and progression of UC. Maggots are known as a traditional Chinese medicine also known as “wu gu chong.” NF-E2-related factor-2 (Nrf2) transcription factor regulates the oxidative stress response and also represses inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect… Show more

“…It should be however mentioned that, as far as we know, our study is the first to show that Nrf2 is downregulated in inflammatory bowel disease. Our observation reinforce the findings obtained in rodents, in which activating and/or upregulating Nrf2 alleviated DSSinduced colitis (41,42), thereby suggesting than reinforcing Nrf2 could be a potential therapeutic option for inflammatory bowel disease patients.…”

“…Oxidative stress and inflammatory responses are the main pathogenic factors associated with UC. Therefore, the improvement of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities has become the research hotspot in the prevention of UC progression ( Wang et al., 2019 ; Gerges et al., 2020 ; Jeon et al., 2020 ). Baicalin is one of the dominant ingredients of KD and has a specific antioxidant and anti-inflammatory function on UC by inhibiting the changes in p-IKBα/IKBα content ( Shen et al., 2019 ).…”
