MaDREB1F confers cold and drought stress resistance through common regulation of hormone synthesis and protectant metabolite contents in banana

Abstract: Adverse environmental factors severely affect crop productivity. Improving crop resistance to multiple stressors is an important breeding goal. Although CBFs/DREB1s extensively participate in plant resistance to abiotic stress, the common mechanism underlying CBFs/DREB1s that mediate resistance to multiple stressors remains unclear. Here, we show the common mechanism for MaDREB1F conferring cold and drought stress resistance in banana. MaDREB1F encodes a dehydration responsive element binding protein (DREB) tr… Show more

“…Additionally, CBF transcription factors also play important roles in other abiotic stress responses, such as salt and drought stress. In banana ( Musa acuminata ), CBF transcription factor MaDREB1F was responsive to salt and osmotic treatment and expressed at the highest level at 24 d, 17 d, respectively [ 26 ]. Overexpression of MaDREB1F in banana enhanced drought tolerance of the transgenic plants.…”

“…T indicates the uniconazole treatment of 0.2 g. CK indicates the water control treatment plantain and promotes glucose decomposition [15,33]. The soluble sugar content affects cold tolerance in plants [34], while other plant hormones such as ABA, ethylene, and jasmonate have also been reported to regulate plant cold resistance [11,32,35]. As a GA inhibitor, uniconazole can alter the content of IAA, ABA, and other hormones in plants [36,37].…”

“…Cold tolerance in banana plants is enhanced by increasing the levels of compatible solutes such as proline, soluble carbohydrates, and phenolic compounds [1,2]. Physiological processes, such as antioxidant capacity, photosynthesis, and plant hormone pathways, also tend to change in response to cold [5,[9][10][11].…”

“…Superoxide dismutase encoding gene ( sod ) responds to cold stress by dismutation of ROS and its intermediate (Gupta et al, 1993; Zhou et al, 2019). A cold inducible zinc finger protein SCOF1 acts as transcription factor of SGBF‐1 which activates the COR gene expression and improves the cold tolerance in plants (Kim et al, 2001; Xu et al, 2022). Some stress‐inducible protein such as chloroplast stroma protein ( Cor15am ) has cryoprotective activity against ROS and its intermediates (Nakayama et al, 2007).…”
