This is the first paper of a series of review articles reporting on natural dyes, their origin and infrared spectra (IR spectra). One aim of this review series is to compare IR spectra of natural dyes from different origin and discuss if this spectroscopic method can be used as versatile tool for the identification of natural dyes and their origin. This part I of the review series is related to four natural dyes based on the chemical structures of naphthoquinone and anthraquinone. Especially discussed are Lawson, juglone and alizarin, which are related to the natural products henna, walnut hull and madder root. Also, the natural dye based on alkanna root is investigated. Compared are the IR spectra of these natural dyes gained from different suppliers with the IR spectra of the pure chemical substances related to the natural dyes. A discussion with spectra from literature is supported. The aim of this review paper is to support infrared spectroscopic data of natural materials (natural dyes) to enable further material identification and also quality control supporting people working in the fields of fiber analytics or with production processes using natural dyes

Synthetic dyes are the primary colouring materials for textile dyeing; however, the residual industrial wastewater from the dyeing process contains complex concentrations of chemical substances, which result in toxicity and environmental pollution with severe negative impacts on ecology and health. This study adopts an eco-friendly perspective, utilizing a mixture of lychee leaves and sappan wood extracts for dyeing silk-linen fabrics. It explores the impacts of dyeing time, mordants, and dyeing methods on the colour quality of the samples. A computer colourimeter was used to compare the colour effects of different dye solution ratios on silk-linen fabrics, and the colour fastness to water, perspiration, and dry rubbing of the dyed fabrics was tested. The results show that the optimized dyeing process for silk-linen fabrics using a mixed solution of lychee leaves and sappan wood includes the following findings: Dyeing time has no significant impact on the CLE L*, a*, and b* values. The highest L* value and colour brightness are achieved under conditions without mordants. By mixing dye solutions in different proportions and treating them with mordants, the colour gamut of silk-linen fabrics has been expanded. The dyed colours are similar to the main popular colours of 2024, making them the trend colours of this year; the samples' fastness performance tests indicate that the colour fastness to water, perspiration, and dry rubbing essentially meets the requirements for textile fabrics. The use of lychee leaves and sappan wood for fabric dyeing is not only environmentally friendly but also possesses significant health-beneficial properties, offering potential commercial value.

Natural dyes have grown in popularity due to their eco-friendliness. They can be used as a substitute for synthetic dyes to minimize environmental pollution. This research investigates the natural colouring behaviour of haar singhar flower (HSF) extract in cotton dyeing. Colorant was extracted under various conditions utilizing various extraction mediums such as aqueous, basic, and acidic. On cotton, it was discovered that applying 55 mL of aqueous extract containing 1.5 g/100 mL sodium chloride for 40 minutes at 70 °C yielded the best colour output. A new hue with good colour fastness was developed utilizing chemical and bio-mordants. The existence of nyctanthin as a colouring agent in haar singhar flowers was discovered through FTIR analysis of the extract. The CIE Lab system revealed that using 2 g/100 mL of pistachio shell as a bio-mordant resulted in good quality reddish yellow hues. It was discovered that ultrasonic radiations have a high potential for isolating colourants and dyeing cotton fabric under decreased conditions of temperature, time and volume. The application of biomordants has made the procedure greener, more efficient, and safer.
