Influence of the Macular Curvature on Foveal Migration after Macular Hole Surgery

Purpose: To investigate whether macular curvature affects the magnitude of foveal migration after macular hole surgery. Methods: From 2014 to 2018, 25 patients diagnosed with idiopathic full-thickness macular hole who underwent vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling were evaluated for macular curvature and postoperative foveal migration using optical coherence tomography images and then correlation analysis was performed. Results: The mean macular curvature coefficient was 4.82 × 10 -4 (8.08 × 10 -4 -1.87 × 10 -4 ), and mean postoperative foveal migration was 0.191 ± 0.281 disc diameters. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between foveal migration and macular curvature (r = 0.504, p = 0.017). Age, axial length, spherical equivalent, macular hole size, and macular hole base diameter were not correlated with foveal migration. Conclusions: Foveal migration increased in proportion to the degree of macular curvature. Therefore, macular curvature can be used as a measure to predict the magnitude of foveal migration.
