The gas pipelines are a significant part of energy transportation pipelines and are recognized as a vital component of societal infrastructure. Earthquake-induced damage to gas pipelines can have severe disastrous humanitarian, social, economic, and ecologic consequences. To mitigate these consequences, one effective approach is to carefully design gas pipeline routes, considering the seismic hazard of the region. Conventional gas pipeline design methods consider only minimum distances from faults and fails to account for seismic potential of faults. This paper introduces a methodology that integrates seismic risk assessment into the gas pipeline route design process. Seismic risk is performed using the HAZUS method, and pipeline routing optimization is accomplished through the application of a metaheuristic algorithm within a GIS-based framework. The methodology is applied in to three gas pipeline routing problems within the high seismic region of southern Iran. The results are then compared with conventional approaches, considering factors such as route length, seismic risks, and seismic damage costs. The findings demonstrate the proposed method effectiveness in mitigating seismic risks related to gas pipeline. The proposed method enables a quantitative and direct incorporation of seismic risk into gas pipeline routing, marking a departure from the qualitative methods presently in use.

It is well accepted that an urban region's seismic resilience is directly related to the seismic resilience of the local water systems. Pipelines having low earthquake resistance generally include old pipes and those susceptible to corrosion. The seismic vulnerability of the water transmission pipelines can be evaluated along with the geologic hazards such as landslides, liquefaction, fault movement, etc. In this study, GIS-based analyses are implemented for one of Tehran's main water transmission pipelines, which transfer Mamloo Dam water to Tehran's southern regions, by considering the four most probable earthquake scenarios to evaluate post-earthquake serviceability of the studied pipeline. Transient Ground Deformation (TGD) due to seismic wave propagation, and also Permanent Ground Deformation (PGD), which may result in liquefaction (lateral spreading, and ground settlement) and landslide, are regarded as destructive earthquake effects on the water transmission pipelines. A restoration curve is also developed for the worst scenario to investigate the adequate post-earthquake water supply throughout the service area and ensure rapid system recovery. Results show that the water serviceability index regarding the worst earthquake scenario (Rey fault activated) is 28%, which means that more than 72% of the study area's population will experience severe disruption of water availability in a potential earthquake.

The assessment of the strength parameters of geological formations in regional scale which encounters thousands of slopes is a complicated approach and time consuming and needs huge field work. This issue is an important research topic concerning the regional seismic-landslide susceptibility analysis or hazard zonation. An empirical regression model was presented to estimate the Geological Strength Index (GSI) with an implication on geological quadrangle of Gorgan region at Alborz mountains range (north of Iran). Two main sets of data were applied in this study: (1) geomorphological data including the slope height, aspect, and distance from faults and distance from thrusts and (2) the physical and mechanical properties of rocks including the unit weight, uniaxial compressive strength (σci), and the petrographic constant (mί) of intact rock. The first group was extracted from a 1 : 100,000 digital geologic map and 10 m digital elevation model (DEM) and the second group was obtained from the Hoek–Brown failure criterion recommended tables. Linear regression equations were generated applying data collected from 294 studied stations using SPSS software. The regression equation predicted GSI in terms of (1) the distance from faults, (2) the distance from thrusts, and (3) the uniaxial compressive strength (σci). The equation had an R2 value of 0.739 and thus fit well to the data. The new method in its present state was recommended for the estimation of the GSI values in regional scale conditions for the assessment of landslide susceptibility and hazard mapping or post events landslide occurrence prediction in the case of probable big earthquakes in Alborz area that is required for emergency responses. The results indicated that the estimation error was about ±30 while the average error was within +5 and −5 and average error percentage was about 3%.
