Macrozonation of Seismic Transient Ground Displacement and Permanent Ground Deformation of Iran

Abstract: Abstract. Iran is located on the Alpide earthquake belt, in the active collision zone between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. This issue makes Iran a country that suffers from geotechnical seismic hazards associated with frequent destructive earthquakes. Also, according to the rapid growth of population and demands for construction lifelines, the risk assessment studies which should be carried out in order to reduce the probable damages is necessary. The most important destructive effects of earthquakes on li… Show more

“…Earthquakes can introduce a range of hazards contingent on factors such as their intensity, geological context, and tectonic characteristics. The initial impact of an earthquake that can damage critical infrastructure and lifelines is TGD resulting from the seismic waves propagation (Farahani et al, 2020). Another significant effect is PGD, which can lead to soil liquefaction, landslide and ground failure.…”

“…A comprehensive SRA has been performed by (Mousavi et al, 2014b) for the existing route of the 3rd Azerbaijan natural gas buried pipeline in Iran. Assessments have primarily focused on existing pipelines, and the SRA has not been considered in the pipeline routing process (Farahani, et al, 2020;Lanzano et al, 2015;.…”

“…Thereafter, by separating the water transmission pipeline into small segments of 1000 m (to neglect behavior/property variability along with the segments and subsequently increase the accuracy of analyses), the outputs of the hazard analyses are assigned to each segment. The main reasons for pipelines' segmentation are to accurately consider the geotechnical seismic hazards that varied continuously in each small region [25].…”

Also, according to the rapid growth of population and demands for construction lifelines, the risk assessment studies which should be carried out in order to reduce the probable damage is necessary [25]. A principal cause of earthquake damage is landsliding, and the ability to predict earthquake-triggering landslide displacements is important for many types of seismic hazard analyses and for the design of engineered slopes [26].…”
