“…The use of collagen is important in this model because it reproduces the in vivo environment of the silicone breast prosthesis where abundant amounts of collagen are found in the breast implant capsule 16–18. Furthermore, it has been shown that collagen promotes MDM differentiation and phagocytic capacity in vitro 24–26.…”

“…Unfortunately, clinical studies to date have been fraught with problems of bias and disease identification and have failed to find a positive connection between breast prostheses and systemic diseases of any kind 10–15. In the laboratory, histomorphologic studies of breast implants and surrounding tissues have demonstrated cellular aggregates containing silicone droplets and an inflammatory capsule containing varying amount of collagen, fibroblasts, macrophages, giant cells, and lymphocytes 16–18. In addition, many silicone products have been shown to cause activation of at least one element of the inflammatory response.…”

“…These pathologies include acute inflammation, granuloma formation, immune adjuvancy, and particle dissemination. 5,7,9,10,13,[17][18][19][20]29 Because fibrinogen has been shown to act synergistically with the surface of other hydrophobic microparticulates to elicit these pathologies, 19,20 it seems reasonable to assume the same synergy operates in the case of yet another hydrophobic material, that is, of PDMS.…”
