Macroparasites in Antarctic Penguins

Abstract: Parasites are the majority of species on Earth (Windsor 1998). The total number of parasite species is likely to be huge, because practically all free-living metazoan species harbor at least one parasite species and almost every individual of every species is parasitized by at least one parasite during its life cycle (Poulin and Morand 2004). The number of parasite species has been estimated as a range from 30 to 71 %

“…Despite its isolation, Antarctica is home to a diversity of fauna and associated microorganisms, including viruses (27), parasites (28), and even antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (29). As such, Antarctic wildlife plays an important role in the epidemiology of many microorganisms.…”

“…Penguins are affected by a wide number of parasites, pathogens and diseases (Clarke and Kerry, 2000;Barbosa and Palacios, 2009;Barbosa et al, 2014;Grimaldi et al, 2015a;Diaz et al, 2017) including emergent diseases, such as feather loss disorder that likely spread from African Penguins to Magellanic penguins (Kane et al, 2010;Barbosa et al, 2015;Grimaldi et al, 2015b). Information about the health status of penguin species and their populations is very scarce and generally has been focused on reporting the presence/absence of pathogens, parasites or diseases with little information of epidemiological variables such as prevalence or intensity of infestation.…”

“…According with Quillfeldt (2002) adult Wilson's storm-petrels from this colony fed mainly on crustaceans (80-90%), being krill the most important prey, whereas samples at nests (mainly regurgitates from chicks) contained a higher sh content. It is known that S. macronectes use krill as intermediate host (Diaz et al 2017).…”

“…The Antarctic Peninsula together with their surrounding islands represent areas with rapid environmental changes (Klimpel et al, 2017) as a result of multiple stressors originated by anthropogenic disturbances. These actions could directly affect the diet, causing changes in the parasitic diversity of birds (Vidal et al 2012;Diaz et al 2017) generating poor body conditions which directly affect their migration (Klasssen et al, 2012). In Antarctica, parasitological researches are relatively recent.…”
