Seagrass meadows are highly productive and ecologically important habitats in estuaries and coastal lagoons, and contain a variety of faunal communities, from which the caridean shrimps are a dominant component. The purpose of this work was to analyze the environmental parameters of water and sediments, with the biological components in seagrass epifaunal communities, from the Western Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. For this, density and diversity of caridean shrimps were analyzed and correlated with environmental parameters and seagrass biomass, and zoogeographic affinities were determined. The spatial distribution of caridean shrimps was recorded for 12 localities with Halodule wrightii and Thalassia testudinum monospecific seagrass meadows. A total of 72 158 individuals of 16 taxa were collected. Among results, the Hippolytidae resulted the most abundant group (92.3%) with eight species, and was followed by Palaemonidae with 7.6% of the abundance and seven species, and the Alpheidae with only one genus. From the total of collected carideans, a 37.3% was found in H. wrightii and 62.7% in T. testudinum. The dominant species were Hippolyte zostericola (12.39ind./m 2 ), Tozeuma carolinense (9.5ind./m 2 ), Thor dobkini (4.84ind./m 2 ) and Palaemonetes vulgaris (4.87ind./m 2 ). The zoogeographic distribution of the carideans presented two groups: species of the Virginian-Carolinean province representing its Southern limit (43.75%) and species of the Brazilian-Caribbean province representing its Northern limit (56.25%). The species H. zostericola, T. carolinense, P. vulgaris, P. pugio and P. intermedius are widely distributed along the Western Atlantic coast. This study has base line information for seagrass habitats, the community of epifaunal carideans and their ecological affinities, previous to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Rev. Biol. Community structure and vertical distribution of the soft bottom macrofauna on Isla Gorgona, Colombian Pacific. Soft bottoms are important in marine ecosystems but their ecology have been less studied in the tropics than in temperate areas. This article describes the temporal, spatial, and vertical distribution of the community structure of subtidal soft bottom macrofauna on Isla Gorgona, Colombian Pacific. Samples were collected in March and June 2011 by corers at 10m depth at five points around the island. Seventy-three species were recorded; polychaetes (55%) and crustaceans (30%) were the dominant groups in number of individuals. The community structure assessed by classification and ordination analysis did not change temporarily, but it shows differences between sampling points, due to the structure of the substrate. The highest abundances of macrofauna were recorded at points with dominance of fine particles (Farallones). However, another point with a similar substrate (Planchón) showed low abundance, apparently due to bioturbation exerted by the fish Heteroconger sp. The presence of Heteroconger sp. in El Planchón could also affect the vertical distribution of the macrofauna, where their relative abundance was homogeneous across the analyzed layers (1-2-3-4-5-10cm). In the other four sites, the abundance of the macrofauna was mainly limited to the first two centimeters of the sediment. Playa Blanca and Remanso showed substrates composed mainly of gravel, recording at the last sampling point the lowest richness, diversity and abundance. Rev. Biol. Trop. 62 (Suppl. 1): 169-188. This paper focuses on the structure of the phytoplankton and macrobenthic invertebrates communities in a productive solar saltworks, as well as the major abiotic determinants of the observed biotic patterns. The observed patterns in the structure of the biotic communities attest that the ecosystem of the low salinity ponds of Kalloni Saltworks is similar to a productive coastal lagoon. Major abiotic determinants include the salinity and confinement gradients, as well as inorganic nutrients loads. The episodic enrichment of the water column in the ponds with either new nutrients from the incoming seawater, or regenerated nutrients released from the sediment, was shown to stimulate the growth to bloom levels of phytoplankton species indicative of organic enrichment and coastal eutrophication. Algal biomass and the accumulated detritus and organic matter on and within the sediment are exploited by opportunistic herbivores and deposit feeders tolerant to organic enrichment. Management measures are needed for the mitigation of the productiveness of the low salinity ponds, e.g. lower water residence times, a shallower water column, facilitation of the oxygenation of the sediment, sediment removal in winter and culture and harvesting of the naturally occuring, edible Cerastoderma glaucum bivalves.
