Macro anatomical investigations of the cranial cervical ganglion in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)

Abstract: Summary:In this study, left and right cranial cervical ganglia (ganglion cervicale craniale) of 9 (6 male, 3 female) roe deer, weighing 20-30 kg were inspected macro anatomically. The cranial cervical ganglion (CCG) was found at ventral of the atlas, caudal of the pharynx, medial retropharyngeal lymph node and levator veli palatini muscle, cranial to the divergence place to final branches of common carotid artery. The internal carotid nerve and jugular nerve ramified from the cranial end of CCG. The jugular ne… Show more

“…Based on Table 2, the exact position of the CCG shows great variation among animal species. However, surprisingly, all published data on morphology of CCG in the animals have pointed out so far that the location of CCG is similar € Ozgel et al, 2004;Kabak et al, 2005;Kabak, 2007;Shao et al, 2007;Ari et al, 2010;Kabak and Onuk, 2010;Shao et al, 2011). In our observation, the dromedary CCG was quite different in location from these species because the dromedary CCG was located caudal to the cranial base, whereas in other species, the CCG was positioned at the most proximal cervical region.…”

“…pigs (Kabak, 2007), roe deers (Kabak and Onuk, 2010), Angora goats (Ari et al, 2010), and white yaks (Shao et al, 2011), no information seems to be available regarding gross anatomy of the dromedary CCG in articles and also in camel's anatomy book (Smuts and Bezuidenhout, 1987).…”

“…The GCC was oval and spindle shaped in our study. This stiuation was similar to literature (6,14,15) The dimensions of the GCC have been reported in goat (27), Tibetan cattle (34) and roe deer (15). In this study, the width and thickness measurements of the GCC were similar to those reported as 3.67 mm and 3.07 mm in the roe deer (15).…”

“…Synapses between these neurons occur in the ganglion (35). GCC and GCT are always present in domestic mammals, whereas the presence of GCM varies with species or even individuals (14,16,35). The presence of ganglion, also named to as ganglia intermedia, has been reported in some species (27).…”

“…Table II, the exact position of the CCG shows great variation among ungulates species. However, surprisingly, all published data on morphology of CCG in these animals concluded that the location of CCG is similar among species (Cui-Sheng et al; Ozgel et al;Shao et al, 2007Shao et al, , 2011Ari et al;Kabak & Onuk). As shown in Table II, the bovine CCG was located slightly more rostral than that of in the pig, roe deer, horse, and Angora goat even though the location of the bovine CCG was very similar to that in the dromedary camel.…”
