Abstract:The Australian philosopher J.L. Mackie (1917–1981) made significant contributions to (meta‐)ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of language, and the philosophy of religion. At least two of his six books,
Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong
(1977) and
The Miracle of Theism
(1982), became classics in their field. This entry on Mackie is devoted to his last book, in which he develops a convincing case for atheism.
