The link between artificial intelligence (AI) and translation, as well as the repercussions of this complex relationship have enjoyed increased attention in today’s post-human translation studies. This paper problematizes how AI, with a special focus on machine translation (MT) and its current trends in the wake of the technological turn, has transformed the concept of translation, and has ultimately resulted in the emergence of new translator roles and competences. We aim to cast a fresh conceptual light on how and why AI continues to challenge the translation industry, imply what benefits and threats it may bring for language professionals and offer a theoretical model of the new roles of the human translator. We claim that the translator’s positioning on the cline between a utopian and dystopian future is a function of factors influencing their changing roles. From a utopian perspective, we view technology as an aid to the human translator where the translator’s toolkit of competences is augmented by CAT tools, neural machine translation (NMT), post-editing and revision skills as well as experiential learning. In the dystopian interpretation of the translator’s job, AI completely takes over the role of translators and phases them out on the grounds of speed, precision and cost. Despite inspiring some outlandish visions, the article emphasizes the idea that although AI has been radically transforming the translation industry of the 2020s, it is still difficult to predict to what extent it is going to ultimately redeem or destroy translators.

Alice Munro, the first female Canadian to have been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, is a literary challenge and delight for the reader also with regards to the usage of references to time and their linguistic construction. Her literary work comprises short stories and one novel, which can more accurately be described as a short story cycle. She takes interest in everyday, small-town life and the human relationships in it, all described in concise, down-to-earth language. The settings in most of her stories are limited communities in a typically Canadian context. This paper deals with her short story “Dance of the Happy Shades” from the collection of the same name (1968), and focuses on a stylistic analysis of time expressions, tense shifts and adverbials of time. Munro has been praised for constructing moods of familiarity, home and small-town safety. The paper attempts to show that she achieves this not solely through the plot and themes, but also with the meticulous care with which she uses time expressions, time adverbials and tense shifts.

Human and machine translation of occasionalisms in literary texts

Literary occasionalisms, new words coined by writers with a particular poetic aim in view, often pose a great challenge for translators. Given recent advances in machine translation (MT), could literary translators benefit from MT when it comes to the translation of occasionalisms? We address this question by considering the work of Austria’s most important nineteenth-century comedy writer, Johann Nestroy (1801–1862). We compare how human translators and two generic neural MT systems (Google Translate, DeepL) translated occasionalisms (compounds, derivations, and blends) in Nestroy’s play Der Talisman into English. While human translators largely refrained from creating new target expressions, the two MT systems generated a number of viable new coinages, most of them by literal translation procedures. In an interactive human-computer environment, using MT output as a repository from which to retrieve novel target solutions or derive inspiration might open up new avenues in the practice of literary translation.
