Mach Wave Control in Explosively Formed Projectile Warhead

Abstract: A Mach wave emerges at the top of the liner when a wave shaper is embedded in charge, and thus seriously breaks the explosively formed projectile (EFP) nose. Thus, to avoid breakage at the EFP nose, the pressure behind the Mach wave should be controlled. An analytical model for calculating Mach wave parameters is presented based on three‐shock theory. The parameters of Mach waves, such as their growth angles and radii, their velocity along the plane of symmetry, and the pressure behind them, can be determined.… Show more

“…Weimann [ 5 ] obtained a large length-diameter ratio EFP with empennage by embedding wave shaper in shaped charge. Zhu [ 6 ] studied three kinds of detonation waveforms in shaped charge with wave shaper (SCWS), and obtained a method to avoid the fracture of EFP with large length-diameter ratio by optimizing the structure of wave shaper. Many scholars carried out numerical simulation researches of shaped charges [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…This conclusion has been presented in several documents. However, the quantitative research of the influence of the wave shaper position on the penetration depth of the shaped charge given in some documents was not fully evaluated [1][2][3][4][5].…”

“…Zhu et al [2] researched the process of controlling the Mach wave surface in the structure of the shaped charge with the use of the wave shaper. Results indicate that when the wave shaper is embedded in charge, the pressure behind the Mach wave can be controlled by changing the wave shaper diameter and the distance between the wave shaper and the liner.…”

“…A cylindrical high-explosive charge with a wave-shaper is mainly used in shaped charges to increase the jet velocity of the shaped charge in high-explosive anti-tank warheads, or to improve the performance of Explosively Formed Projectiles [2,3]. Researchers around the world have conducted extensive studies on detonation wave propagation and interaction with regular/Mach reflection.…”
