Maceration and liquid–liquid extractions of phenolic compounds and antioxidants from Algerian olive oil mill wastewater

Abstract: Olive oil mill wastewater (OMW) is a major waste stream from the olive oil industry. It is highly polluted due to phenolic compounds. The present study focused on the physicochemical properties of OMW as well as the quantitative and qualitative effects of two methods of extraction (maceration and liquid-liquid extraction) of phenolic compounds. MethodsLiquid-liquid extraction and maceration methods were used for the extraction of phenolics. Spectrophotometry and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Electrosp… Show more

“…Incubate the reaction medium at room temperature for 10 minutes. Measure the absorbance of the reaction mixture at 700 nm against a blank, which contains all reagents except FeCl3 (Gueboudji et al, 2022b). The same protocol is followed for the three standard antioxidants (Ascorbic acid, Trolox, and BHT).…”

“…Traditional extraction techniques like, digestion [149], percolation [150], maceration [151] and the preparation of decoctions and infusions [152] are being replaced by advanced extraction methods to enhance the efficiency and specificity of extracting bioactive compounds [153]. These advanced approaches employ diverse techniques including microwaves, ultrasound, supercritical fluids, and more [153].…”

“…The result is typically referred to as a medicinal product. Gueboudji et al (2023) gave a comparison between maceration and liquid-liquid extraction where they show phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities dependent on the extraction method.…”
