MAC Protocol Design for Smart Meter Network

Abstract: The new generation of power metering system that is advanced metering infrastructure "MI is expected to enable remote reading, control, demand response and other advanced functions, based on the integration of a new two-way communication network, which will be referred as Smart Meter Network SMN . In this chapter, we focus on the design principles of multiple access control M"C protocols for SMN. First, we list several features of SMN relevant to the design choice of the M"C protocols. Next, we introduce some … Show more

“…Low-power wide area network of the IoT, including WiFi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, and long range (LoRa), provides the technical support for the development of indoor environment monitoring. 8 An indoor environmental monitoring system based on WiFi is recently introduced. 9 This system employs Arduino as the main control chip, which collects indoor environmental information including temperature, humidity, and light intensity.…”

“…Another approach is to use a dedicated network. For industrial applications, wired network technology is preferred, such as: AS-Interface, CAN, Data highway 485, DeviceNet, EIA/TIA 232, EIA 485, Foundation fieldbus, HART, Industrial real-time ethernet, Modbus, Profinet/Profibus [2,7,8,9]. Such network technologies are designed for local area or campus wide networks and the cable technology used can be expensive.…”
