MAC and encapsulation efficiency of satellite DVB using fade mitigation techniques

Abstract: SUMMARYThe paper discusses cross-layer issues of DVB-S2 networks with adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) on the physical layer forward link. Also future return channel via satellite (RCS) systems employing adaptive schemes on the return link are analysed. Cross-layer issues focus on medium access control (MAC) and encapsulation layer effects. Recent work of the S2 encapsulation over generic streams (GS) is described, and the effects on quality of service (QoS) scheduling for the forward link are analysed by … Show more

“…If section packing were not used, the overhead increases to 80% due to padding. This high overhead is not directly caused by the MPE encapsulation, but results from changes of ModCod values and padding [18]. The padding arises because MPE sections may not be fragmented at the end of BBframes.…”

“…To assess the benefit of the flexible fragmentation requires the performance to be analyzed under realistic channel conditions and with representative traffic [18]. A channel model utilized a fading event simulation [19] that represented a typical rain fade event for Western Europe.…”

“…Proposed Work We have proposed a new protocol architecture called Abis over IP over DVB-S2 in which the signaling and Transcoding Rate and Adaptation Unit (TRAU) frames are fonnatted over UDP/IP and RTP/UDP/IP respectively and encapsulated in Generic Stream (GS) stream of DVB-S2 [1] over the forward link. In the return link from BTS to BSC, the burst infonnation is carried in fixed Burst length time slots of MFTDMA [2] frame. Simulation is perfonned under delay and different loss scenarios of the Satellite and the results are analyzed.…”

“…As mentioned above, an adaptive RCS is considered. 5 Thus, for the use of adaptive coding and modulation as fade mitigation technique, it is additionally necessary to decide which combination of Modulation and Coding (ModCod) is used in each time slot. The decision which ModCod is the optimum for a terminal is taken based on the Channel Estimator and Modcod Selector (CEMS) methods (cf.…”
