Abstract: In situations in which a client is deemed to present a serious risk of violence to another, a responsibility arises for the counselor to use reasonable care to shield the anticipated victim from such danger. Guidelines are provided to assist social workers in ethical practice in "duty to protect" situations while avoiding malpractice.
