Abstract: Plants are a valuable source of secondary metabolites. Many phytochemicals are obtained from the plant sources that are used as valuable medicinal agents. Chalcones are one of the important secondary metabolites obtained from many edible plants like foods, vegetables, tea, spices and natural foodstuffs. Chalcones considered as obligate intermediated in flavonoid biosynthesis but they do not accumulate to an appreciable degree in most plants. Chalcones are a group of plant-derived polyphenolic compounds belongi… Show more

“…Chalcones (1,3-diphenylprop-2-en-1-ones) are compounds of natural origin serving as starting components for flavonoid biosynthesis in plants [ 113 , 114 ]. Due to the interesting range of biological activities of chalcone derivatives and analogs, the chalcone scaffold is considered to be an important synthetic moiety in medicinal chemistry [ 115 , 116 ].…”

“…[4] Long ago, plants containing chalcones were utilized in traditional treatments. [5] They proved their efficacy in working as antioxidants [6] and in treating microbial infections, [7] fungal infections, [8,9] viral infections, [10] and inflammations. [11] Besides, recent studies have proven its effectiveness as an anticancer.…”

“…The chalcones are produced by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation method [4]. Due to the α, β-unsaturated carbonyl group contained in chalcones [5]. They have a lot of biological activity and can be used as good intermediates as in the synthesis of a number of heterocyclic compounds.…”
