M‐CAM expression as marker of poor prognosis in epithelial ovarian cancer

Abstract: Currently available clinico–pathologic criteria provide an imperfect assessment of outcome for patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Identification of prognostic factors related to tumor biology might improve this assessment. We investigated the prognostic significance of the melanoma cell adhesion molecule (M‐CAM) in EOC. Using the same antibody, M‐CAM expression was tested by Western blotting in protein extracts and by immunohistochemestry in tissue microarrays generated from 133 consecutiv… Show more

“…Several lines of evidence suggested that CD146 expression is upregulated in various types of experimental and clinical tumors, including melanoma (Shih et al, 1994;Johnson et al, 1997), prostate cancer (Wu et al, 2001(Wu et al, , 2004, epithelial ovarian cancer (Aldovini et al, 2006), non-small-cell lung cancer (Kristiansen et al, 2003) and mesothelioma (Bidlingmaier et al, 2009). More importantly, ectopic expression of CD146 in melanoma was found in a positive correlation with tumorigenic transformation and the development of metastatic potential in both mice models and clinical data (Luca et al, 1993;Li et al, 2002).…”

“…21 Increased CD146 expression has been shown to be closely associated with an advanced stage of malignant melanoma, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer. [21][22][23][24][25] However, the relation between CD146 expression and the malignancy of mesothelioma has not been investigated. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the utility of CD146 detection for distinguishing malignant pleural mesothelioma and reactive mesothelium in diagnostic cytology.…”

“…No immunoreactivity occurred in normal ovarian tissue (original magnification, 25 Â ) (f). UbcH10 immunoreactivity has been evaluated in two TMAs (constructed at the Department of Histopathology, S Chiara Hospital, Trento, Italy), as described (Aldovini et al, 2006). TMAs included 60 carcinomas arising from the ovarian surface epithelium, each represented by three different 0.6 mm cores.…”

“…Thus, tumors were graded into well differentiated (G1), moderately well differentiated without nuclear atypia (G2), moderately well differentiated with nuclear atypia (G3) and poorly differentiated or undifferentiated (G4) (Vacher-Lavenu et al, 1993). Further details on TMAs generation are reported elsewhere (Aldovini et al, 2006). Complete follow-up data were available for all patients from the Departments of Gynecological Surgery and Medical Oncology of the S Chiara Hospital of Trento.…”
