“…The ideal amino acid composition for human nutrition and that for livestock are very similar, but the required amounts for the latter are usually higher; for example, while lysine (the most limiting amino acid in cereals) requirement for humans is 30 mg kg −1 day −1 , 41 for pigs it is approximately 20% higher and it has been difficult to agree on the precise level required. 42,43 The amino acid contents of grain legumes in our trial are mostly in agreement with values reported elsewhere; except that methionine was 19% higher in narrow-leafed lupin 44 and cysteine was 36% lower in faba bean. 25 The lower content of cysteine in faba bean grown in Finland should not be considered a disadvantage, since cysteine is produced from methionine in most monogastrics, including humans.…”

“…Values for the rat, pig and human are shown in Table 4 as mg/kg 0·75 . The summary of pig values reported most recently ( 40 ) includes values obtained by a variety of different approaches by 5 different authors some of which include slightly higher values than these summarized here but which the authors identified as potential overestimates. Had these been included the mean of all the studies would be slightly higher at 48 mg/kg 0·75 or 15 mg/kg.…”

“…Several studies were conducted to determine total requirements (maintenance and deposition) of lysine for growing pigs (Heger et al, 2008;Van Milgen et al, 2008;Ringel & Susenbeth, 2009). However, in Brazil, there are few studies on the maintenance requirements and efficiency of lysine for protein deposition, obtained separately.…”
