Soil is an integral part of the landscape and it is also a resource which is used by man. As such, there are two areas of development which can be identified within the topic of soil study. One is concerned with environmental processes, where soil can be viewed as a component involved in the interaction between geomorphological, hydrological and biogeographical systems. The other is concerned with the evaluation of the quality of soil resources, their spatial variation and their agricultural uses. The evaluation and uses of soil resources forms the topic of the second half of this review and the interaction of soil systems with other environmental systems is the focus of the first half of the review.
