Lyotropic Phase Behavior of Poly(ethylene oxide)−Poly(butadiene) Diblock Copolymers: Evolution of the Random Network Morphology

Abstract: The phase behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(butadiene) (PEO-PB) diblock copolymers mixed with water was studied using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. Two sets of diblocks were synthesized by adding different lengths of PEO to hydroxy terminated PB with degrees of polymerization N PB ) 46 and 170. Two-component mixtures were investigated as a function of block c… Show more

“…Flory−Huggins parameter (χ) affords an intrinsic thermodynamic driving force for BCP self‐assembly . BCPs with a high χ, and thus a high phase‐segregation ability, can promote self‐assembly.…”

“…The water was removed by sublimation to eliminate the possibility of surface‐tension‐derived artifacts associated with a traditional drying process. The representative nature of this sample preparation procedure for hydrogel morphology has been discussed elsewhere 22–27. Images were also produced for the third face, the perpendicular face, but the hydrogel was too thin to be mounted in a manner consistent with the fracturing procedure described previously, and these images were not of a quality necessary for subsequent analysis.…”

“…Most of the published experimental PB‐PEO assembly studies focused mainly on the general morphology as a function of f . The effect of M n and f on PB‐PEO polymersome bilayer thickness, mechanistic properties, detergent response, mixtures of two PB‐PEO polymers, or adhesiveness of functionalized PB‐PEO polymersomes have also been investigated.…”
