Lymphovascular invasion is a high risk factor for stage I/II colorectal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: The prognostic value of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in stage I/II colorectal cancer (CRC) does not reach a consensus. To systematically assess prognostic significance of LVI, databases of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched from inception up to 10 Dec 2016. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to determine the prognostic effects. Nineteen relevant studies including 9881 total patients were enrolled. Our results showed that LVI is significantly associated with … Show more

“…Limited consensus exists on the importance of LVI as risk factor for stage II colon cancer. Even if recent studies seemed to confirm its prognostic value for overall survival and disease recurrence, whether patients with LVI benefit from adjuvant treatment remains controversial 33,34 . Interestingly, LVI had no significant impact on survival in the present analysis (HR 1.02, CI 95% 0.98, 1.07) (Figure 3).…”

“…Therefore, tumor budding scores are commonly recorded for CRC patients, especially those with early stages. In addition, LVI refers to invasion of tumor cells to surrounding blood vessels and/or lymphatics, and is considered as an important prognostic factor for earlystage CRC, which helps to determine the course of therapy [38,39]. Our data indicated a trend of reduction in levels of tumor-infiltrating GMCs in patients with higher tumor budding scores, while IMCs showed an opposing trend.…”

“…LVI is known to be an important prognostic factor for postoperative recurrence and poor prognosis in patients with other cancers [ 21 22 23 ]. Lymphatic invasion was a negative prognostic factor independent of tumor stage in patients with thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and lymphatic invasion was a risk factor for lymph node metastasis in T1 tumors and a high risk factor of recurrence in patients without lymph node involvement [ 21 ].…”
