Lymphoma of the Sublingual Gland: Clinical, Morphological, Histopathological, and Genetic Characterization

Abstract: Background: Lymphoma of the sublingual gland is rare, representing 1% of all salivary gland lymphomas. In this case report, we present three new cases and compare them to previously published cases, with the aim of characterizing the clinical, morphological, histopathological, and genetic features of this type of malignancy. Materials and Methods: We provide a clinical description of three cases along with a characterization of the microscopic features, including morphology, and immunohistochemistry. In additi… Show more

“…The third most common malignancy in the head and neck area after squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma is lymphoma. Its accounts for 2%-5% of salivary gland neoplasms [1,2,3]. The parotid glands are most frequent involved, accounting for 70% of cases, followed by the submandibular glands (25%), sublingual glands, and minor salivary glands (<10%) [1,2,3,4,5].…”

“…The most affected anatomical regions are the stomach (30%), orbit (12%), skin (10%), and lungs (9%) [ 5 ]. Lymphomas of the salivary glands represent around 1.7%-3.1% of all salivary gland neoplasms and the incidence is 79% in the parotid glands, 18% in the submandibular glands, 2% in the minor salivary glands, and 1% in the sublingual glands [ 4 , 6 ].…”

“…The salivary gland is the typical site of head and neck involvement 3 . While the parotid gland is primarily associated with salivary gland MALT lymphomas, the involvement of the sublingual gland is quite rare 4 . Moreover, even in the oral and maxillofacial lesions, MALT lymphoma of the sublingual gland is uncommon.…”
