Lymphocytic gastritis—relationship to Campylobacter pylori infection

Abstract: The existence of a distinctive form of chronic gastritis characterized by marked infiltration of the surface and pitlining epithelium by mature T lymphocytes has been confirmed. Seventeen cases were identified amongst 382 patients with active chronic gastritis (4.5 per cent). The cases with lymphocytic gastritis had significantly higher counts of intraepithelial lymphocytes than sex and age-matched controls drawn from a series of patients with the usual form of active Type B chronic gastritis. Furthermore, the… Show more

“…The controversy between the negative histology and positive serology for H pylori in LG in the present and previous studies [5,6,13] might be explained by the fact that the bacteria are present in very small numbers, which could make them impossible to detect. In the present study, even the patients histologically positive for H pylori showed only a small amount of bacteria.…”

“…The reported prevalence of LG among patients with dyspepsia varies between 1-8 % [4,5] . Most dyspeptic patients with LG are seropositive for Helicobacter pylori, indicating that LG may represent an atypical host immune response to the infection [6] . Cases associated with H pylori infection have been reported to respond to H pylori eradication treatment [7][8][9] .…”

“…It is an uncommon condition that is present in 0.83% of unselected gastric biopsies (79) and in 1.7-4.5% of inflamed gastric biopsies (85,86). The essential diagnostic feature is the presence of increased mucosal lymphocytes in the lamina propria, as well as in the surface and foveolar epithelium.…”

“…The organisation and histological features of the lymphoid tissue in the GIT differs from that of peripheral lymph nodes, occurring in the form of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) which has unique immuno-physiological characteristics. The lymphoid tissue of MALT may be a normal tissue component, as in the intestine; or it may be acquired as a consequence of an autoimmune or inflammatory disorder, as in the stomach (Isaacson et al, 1988;Dixon et al, 1988). Lymphomas of the GIT may therefore behave differently from primary nodal disease.…”
