Lymphocytes, Interleukin 6 and D-dimer Cannot Predict Clinical Outcome in Coronavirus Cancer Patients: LyNC1.20 Study

Abstract: Background/Aim: Knowledge of Coronavirus 19 (COVID19) pathogenetic mechanisms is necessary to provide new treatment strategies. This study aims to assess how oncological disease impacts on the clinical course of COVID-19 patients. Patients and Methods: From 1 st March to 30 th April 2020, 96 COVID-19 patients were classified according to clinical outcome as severe (n=67) and moderate (n=29). Demographic data, medical history, admission lymphocytes, procalcitonin (PCT), were collected. Results: A statistically … Show more

“…Moreover, due to the first admission in the COVID-19 section, the patient required 14 days quarantine and further COVID-19 swab test at home, impacting on patient's return to daily activities and work. Additionally, due to the cross-infection risk, all health care workers wore personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce cross infection in oncological frail patients (36,37).…”

“…The study presided over by Vanni et al [69] tried to understand more about the prognostic value of blood tests in a small cohort of 97 Italian cancer patients suffering from SARS-CoV-2 infection where the cohort was divided into 2 groups [moderate, severe]. Despite the reported lower lymphocyte count in severe group, it was proved to be statistically insignificant.…”

“…In the study at MSK center [10] , Elevated initial creatinine was associated with increased severity (P=0.002 for ICU/intubation/DNI; P=0.002 for death) [10] . From these studies, it can be inferred that to provide better treatments, previous oncological history should be taken into consideration in times of admitting such patients in the hospitals [69] .…”
