Lymphocyte subsets show marked differences in their distribution between blood and the afferent and efferent lymph of peripheral lymph nodes.

Abstract: The surface phenotypes (CD1, CD4, CD5, CD8, SBU-T19, MHC class I, MHC class II, and sIg) of cells in blood, lymph nodes, and lymph were determined to examine simultaneously the distribution of lymphocyte subsets circulating in blood, afferent lymph, and efferent lymph of a peripheral lymph node. Marked differences in the percentage of certain lymphocyte subsets were apparent within the compartments examined, suggesting that lymphocyte subsets leave the blood with differing efficiencies. Lymphocyte subsets also… Show more

“…The most important one seems to be α4β7-integrin, which interacts with MAdCAM-1 (mucosal cell adhesion molecule) on endothelial cells. Expression of α4β7-integrin has been demonstrated on memory T cells of sheep which migrate through intestinal lymph nodes and PP [41]. Likewise, high levels of α4β7-integrin were detected on lymphocytes in ovine intestinal lymph, whereas expression in peripheral or pulmonary lymph was low [1,42].…”

“…Although ␥␦-T cells are a significant component of ruminant peripheral blood, afferent lymph (draining nonlymphoid tissues), and efferent lymph (draining lymph nodes), they are only a minor population within lymph nodes (11). This, as well as the observation that they form a major lymphoid population within epithelial tissues, has led investigators to suggest that ␥␦-T cells recirculate preferentially through nonlymphoid tissues like skin and gut (2).…”

“…In addition, native antigen-loaded DC could encounter B cells that enter the lymph node by HEV and activate them (Qi et al 2006). Other cell types are also transported by aVerent vessels, such as T and B lymphocytes and macrophages (Mackay et al 1988). Indeed DC, T, and B cells leave peripheral tissues and migrate towards lymph nodes owing to their expression of chemokine receptor CCR7 (Bromley et al 2005;Debes et al 2005).…”
