Lymphangiogenesis and lymphangiodysplasia: From molecular to clinical lymphology

Abstract: The lymph vascular system parallels the blood vasculature and as one of its key functions returns liquid and solutes to the bloodstream, including macromolecules that have escaped from blood capillaries and entered the interstitium. In conjunction with interspersed lymph nodes and lymphoid organs, the lymphatic vasculature also acts as a conduit for trafficking immune cell populations. Echoing the explosion of knowledge about blood vessel angiogenesis (properly termed "hemangiogenesis"), the past two decades h… Show more

“…Primary lymphedema results from defects of the lymphatic system leading to insufficiencies in transport, whereas the more common secondary lymphedema arises as a consequence to surgical, malignant, inflammatory, or traumatic disruption of the lymphatics (Rockson, 2001;Witte et al, 2001). As a chronic disease, lymphedema leads to the remodeling of skin and subcutaneous tissues (Daroczy, 1995), accumulation of lipids (Schirger et al, 1962), macrophage recruitment (Piller, 1990), and failures in Langerhans dendritic cell migration (Olszewski et al, 1990) in the affected tissue.…”

“…Macroscopically, lymphangiomas are solitary, multicystic masses. The cysts may be interconnected and contain serous or chylous fluid (Witte et al, 2001). The lining of the cysts is smooth and they have thin walls.…”

“…The lymphatic vascular system plays a critical role in immune surveillance, tissue fluid homeostasis, and fat absorption [23,24]. Perturbations in the maintenance and function of the lymphatic system can lead to a variety of pathological disorders, including lymphatic dilation and lymphedema [23,25,26].…”
