Lymphangiectatic Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient with AIDS

Abstract: Kaposi's sarcoma is a malignant disease that originates in the lymphatic endothelium. It has a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. Its four distinct clinical forms are: classic, endemic, iatrogenic and epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma. In non-HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma, the disease is typically limited to the lower extremities, but in immunodeficient patients, it is a multifocal systemic disease. The clinical course of the disease differs among patients, ranging from a single or a few indolent lesions to … Show more

“…associated KS is a tumour of lymphatic endothelial with cutaneous-mucous and visceral manifestations. Our case describe that lymphedema in KS appears multifactorial including lympho-venous obstruction, regional lymphadenopathy as well as increased lymphatic permeability (Santos et al, 2013). It also had a proliferation of endothelial cells that may lead to the occlusion of lymphatic lumens (Dean et al, 2017).…”

“…(HHV-8) também é um desses fatores, que foi encontrado em todas as formas eestágios do SK (Pereira et al, 2013) (Santos et al, 2013). Além disso, a terapia antirretroviral usada para tratar a AIDS se fez muito eficaz contra o SK, mostrando que a susceptibilidade de um paciente HIV positivo em tratamento com a TARV é menor quando comparado com um que não faz o uso (de Almeida et al, 2017).…”

“…There are four forms of Kaposi's sarcoma, the classic form mainly affects elderly men, the African form was recognized in young men and children in Central Africa, iatrogenic SK mainly in transplant patients but also due to chemotherapy and to immunosuppressive treatments [3] , the epidemic form associated with HIV has been described in homosexual men [4] , our patient presents the latter form. These forms are distinguished by a different geographical distribution and clinical presentation, but they have in common the same type histological despite their extremely variable clinical pictures.…”
