“…Since the identification of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) as the cause of AIDS, one of the greatest challenges has been the development of a vaccine that will prevent infection and/or ameliorate disease progression (38,43). Although over 100 phase I, II, and III vaccine clinical trials of different candidates have been conducted all over the world, only a few candidates have advanced to efficacy testing and none has yet to show any benefit in prevention or control of HIV-1 (HIV Vaccine Database; www.iavi.org).…”

“…The hypothesis that AIDS is an epidemic form of the endemic variety of African KS (Weber, 1984) is not supported in this study. The same holds true for the classical European form, in which a recent study in Greece failed to demonstrate LAV antibodies (Papaevangelou et al, 1984). Notwithstanding the high incidence of KS in the Katana area, no cases of childhood lymphadenopathy have been diagnosed in the area , giving credit to Templeton's (1972) suggestion that the distribution of endemic generalized cases might differ from that of the more usual skin forms.…”
