Lycopodium Alkaloids: Xii. Flabelliformine

Abstract: Evidence is furnished which establishes the structure of a new allcaloid isolated from Lyro)odiz~nl flabellifornze. In the present publication we wish to report evidence which enables the assignment of structure I to a new allialoid obtained froin Lyco;bodiz~mJEabelliforme. The alkaloid, for ivhich the name flabellifornline seenls appropriate, is sparingly soluble in cold ether. Advantage was taken of this property in its isolatioil from the bases obtained, after the separation of lycopodine from the crude alkal… Show more

“…In acrifoline a hydrogen is not available a t Cq for a concerted elimination, and it is postulated that 5The double bond i n the ion distinguished by * m a y occupy a 5,6-or 6,7- The acrifoline spectrum demonstrates again that the absence of a hydrogen a t C* results in a departure from the fragmentation pattern normally observed. TWO alkaloids, flabelliformine (18) and lycoclavine (19) with oxygen functions a t C7 and Cg and a t C6 and C7, respectively, will now be discussed. The spectrum of flabelliformine (Fig.…”

“…Thus Young (6) has reported the isolation of two new alltaloids, flabelliformine and flabelline, t o each of which a structure has been assigned (7,8). Alam (9) has found four alkaloids of ltnown structure (clavolonine, lycodine, annotinine, and des-N-methyl-a-obscurine) and a new base hydroxy-des-N-methyl-a-obscurine, the structure of which is discussed in this paper.…”

“…They reported the isolation of lycopodine, the bases L1 to LG, and nicotine. Base L l has since been shown to be dihydrolycopodine (2), L2 to be acetyldihydrolycopodine (3), and LG to be a mixture of two compounds, a-and P-obscurine (4).T h e structures of lycopodine and its derivatives (2) and the obscurines ( 5 ) are now kllown.Flabelliformi~le, a hydroxy derivative of lycopodine, was recently isolated from this plant, and its structure elucidated (6).In this coinmunication we wish to report the isolation and structural elucidation of flabelline, another ininor alkaloid of L. j?abellzforme. The separation procedure used in working up the alkaloids is given in some detail since some fractions are still being investigated and v,rill be reported up011 in a subsequent paper.…”
